Pet Foods and Prescription Diets

In modern times you as a pet owner and consumer have many choices for your pet’s diet. There are three forms: canned, semi-moist and dry. Provided that a manufacturer has followed the AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) standards each type can provide complete nutrition for your pet. Your veterinarian will take your pet’s lifestyle, age and overall health into account before recommending a diet to you.

Pet food manufacturers use extensive research to develop their diets. Knowledge of pet nutrition, food palatability, health and nutritional requirements are always being improved on by manufacturers.

After decades of research manufacturers have determined the right combinations of ingredients to provide pets with the right mix of nutrients. They include each ingredient to benefit a pet’s diet. Ingredients are not included as “fillers”.

Homemade vs. Commercially – Prepared

In light of recent recalls on commercially – prepared diets, you might think it safer and more nutritious to prepare your own food for your pet.  Remember; there are a number of important factors to be considered.

The nutritional needs of cats and dogs are different from humans. Owners often find it difficult to know what those requirements are and to meet them.

An example of requirements of cats and dogs would be calcium. Too high or too low may adversely affect the health of a pet. In the case of fat too much can cause pancreatitis, a life threatening disease.

If the food is improperly prepared and becomes contaminated with bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli your pet can become very ill. Safeguards are put in place by manufacturers to prevent such problems.

We provide dietary advice for our clients to help them make the right decision when it comes to feeding your pet. For your convenience we carry products from both Hill’s and Medi-cal as we believe that their products meet your pet’s requirements and we have seen firsthand the benefits to our patients.
